A few words from the people whose watches we've worked on

I brought in my grandfather's old automatic — it hadn't run in years. They produced a written assessment before doing anything, which I wasn't expecting but really appreciated. The watch was returned running steadily, and the service record gave me a clear picture of what was done. Took a few weeks, which seemed right for the work involved.

The dial on my dress watch had become quite dull — nothing wrong with the movement, just the face. They were very straightforward about what cleaning might and might not achieve, and specifically said they wouldn't alter the original look without my go-ahead. We agreed on a light clean, and the result was exactly what I wanted. Good communication throughout.

I noticed my watch was running a bit fast while I was staying in Chiang Mai. Dropped in without an appointment and they checked it on their timing machine on the spot — no charge. Came back the following day for the full service. The result was measured and professional, and the paperwork they handed back with the watch was impressively thorough.

I collect pocket watches, mostly Thai and Swiss pieces from the mid-twentieth century. The work here is careful and respectful — they clearly understand that these aren't objects to be modernised. The restoration plan they provided before starting my most recent piece was detailed and gave me confidence in what they intended to do.

My husband's watch needed a routine service and I was a bit apprehensive about using someone new. The initial assessment put my mind at ease — they noted everything in writing and were clear about what the service did and didn't include. The watch came back in noticeably better condition, and the turnaround was quicker than they estimated, which was a pleasant surprise.

Brought in a 1960s movement that needed new jewels and a mainspring. They were honest that the mainspring was available but the jewels would require sourcing, and gave me a realistic timeline. Everything they said proved accurate. The movement is running within a few seconds per day now, which for its age and condition I think is a good outcome.

A closer look at three pieces

Case Study 01 · Vintage Restoration

A 1958 dress watch, not worn since the 1990s

Challenge

The owner had inherited the watch from her father and wanted to wear it again, but it had been sitting unwound for decades. The mainspring was set, the movement dry, and the dial had surface oxidation across the lower half. The hands were mismatched — a later pair had apparently been fitted at some point.

Approach

After a written assessment, we produced a restoration plan covering the movement overhaul, the dial treatment options, and two choices for the hands — either source period-correct originals or refit the existing mismatched pair. The owner chose to pursue period hands, which we located within two weeks. The dial received a conservative clean that lifted surface dirt while preserving its aged character.

Result

The movement was running at +8 seconds per day across positions at collection — good performance for a sixty-year-old calibre. The owner was pleased with the dial outcome and the restored hands. Total time from drop-off to collection: six weeks.

"I expected to be given a price and told to wait. Instead they explained every option and let me decide. That made a real difference." — Malee, Chiang Mai

Case Study 02 · Routine Maintenance

A daily-wear automatic, running fast after monsoon season

Challenge

The owner noticed his watch was gaining about a minute per day through the wet season. He'd had it serviced elsewhere three years earlier but hadn't returned since. He was also unsure whether to service before there were problems or wait until something stopped working.

Approach

Assessment showed the existing lubricants had degraded unevenly — a common finding after a humid Chiang Mai season. The routine maintenance service covered a full disassembly, ultrasonic clean, fresh calibre-appropriate oils, and reassembly. We explained to the owner why servicing at intervals matters in tropical conditions, and suggested a three-year cycle going forward.

Result

Post-service timing showed the movement running at +3 seconds per day, well within acceptable range. Turnaround was four days. The owner returned the following month with a second watch for the same service.

"Clear explanation, no unnecessary extras, and it runs better than it has in years." — Thanachai, Lamphun

Case Study 03 · Dial & Hand Refresh

A 1970s field watch with a faded tropical dial

Challenge

A collector brought in a field watch with a matte dial that had developed the brownish discolouration sometimes called a "tropical" tone. He was undecided — some collectors prize this patina, others prefer a cleaner surface. The hands were also showing minor oxidation. The movement ran well and didn't need a service.

Approach

We discussed both options at length. The collector decided to leave the tropical tone undisturbed and instead focus on the hands, which received a careful surface treatment to stabilise the oxidation without polishing away its character. No dial work was performed — by mutual agreement.

Result

The hands were returned with a consistent tone that complemented the dial without appearing freshly refinished. The collector was satisfied that the watch looked considered rather than restored. Total cost was at the lower end of the tier due to the limited scope of work.

"They talked me through the choices without nudging me either way. That's harder to find than you'd think." — Kraisorn, collector
